THE COMPANY

A world-wide manufacturer of storage systems and logistics equipment.

THE CHALLENGE

Following amalgamation with a Scandinavian group, the challenge was to reach high levels of profitability as quickly as possible.

THE STRATEGY

To allow the new group to compete in sectors where previously price had constrained both companies by challenging the way the product was designed and manufactured and by challenging traditional material procurement practices.

Two multi-disciplined teams were formed with individuals drawn from all the countries in which the group operated. The Design Team rationalised product specifications, standards, manufacturing and testing methods. The Material Team created a live, networked database for global supply of material detailing manufacturing process methods, market prices and supply routes

THE BENEFITS

Clarity gained of customer requirements.
Reduction from 37 to 5 basic design specs.
Cost reduction to the group of £2.9M (10%) within the first year.
Cashflow improved through reduced inventory (4 to 9 stock turns)
The power of shared information across the group became highly valued.
A database and methodology established that was used for other areas of major spend.
A clear understanding established of the contribution that professionally structured supplier relationships make to a company.

QUOTES FROM MANAGEMENT

"This programme of work began as an exercise on how to get the most from an international supply base. It has however had effects far beyond our expectations. It has impacted all areas of our business. It has helped the group to work together and has generated trust and value for honest behaviour based on fact. The team structures, reporting and visibility of the project contributed to its inclusive, collaborative character. "
