THE COMPANY

A world leader in the manufacture and supply of racking, partitioning and conveyer systems.

THE CHALLENGE

As the capability of craneage systems increases the requirements of size and the accuracy in the positioning of racking systems increases. So, how to achieve tighter positional tolerances over greater distances without costly investment in new manufacturing equipment?

THE STRATEGY

Producing one off quantities of any product to higher than normal tolerances is not usually a problem. Producing production volumes of that product is normally where the issue lies. In this case we found measurement to be the key. The problem was that the operators were not used to working with such demanding accuracy. In addition the measuring equipment and equipment maintenance programmes were by no means adequate. By designing and implementing a statistical process control system supported by educational and training programmes for both line management and operators and introducing an asset management system, the manufacturing unit was able to meet the demands of increased process capability without investment in new equipment.

THE BENEFITS

The new market requirements were met using the existing capital equipment.

More accurate manufacture has resulted in lower installation costs.

Fewer interruptions to production resulting from rework and asset failure.

QUOTES FROM THE MANAGEMENT

"Process control is clearly the key, however implementation must include the operational managers, the operators and take account of the needs of the assets themselves."

Director of Operations

"In process measurement, by reducing both waste and lost time, have made delivery targets considerably easier to achieve."
